Acanthoecopsis unguiculata H.A.Thomsen (1973: 22, figs 3–5; 1977: 93, figs 8–29)

Synonyms

Pseudomicrosportella ornata Scagel & J.Stein (1961: 1211, figs 9–11)

Description

Cells solitary. Lorica to 12 µm long, 11 µm diameter; lorica chamber 7–8 µm long, 9 µm diameter. Longitudinal costae 13–15, extending as 5–6 µm long spines beyond the lorica chamber, in-curving, each bearing a small terminal claw. Transverse costae 6 or 7, confined to posterior half of lorica. Protoplast spherical, 2.8–4.5 µm diameter, located posteriorly in lorica, enclosed by a sheath.

Distribution

Inshore stations in Prydz Bay, East Antarctica (Marchant, 1985b); Greenland (Thomsen, 1982).

Comments

Acanthocorbis unguiculata is an important Antarctic heterotroph and has been observed to ingest particles in the size range of 0.063–1.0 µm diameter and fluorescently labelled dextrans with molecular weight of 3,900–2,000,000 (Marchant & Scott, 1992).
