Costae at anterior and posterior ends of lorica transversely arranged and obliquely orientated at their extremities; median costal strips longitudinal, c. 80, closely packed; costal strips of posterior part of lorica thicker than others. Protoplast spherical, c. 2.6 µm diameter, located just below centre of lorica. Flagellum extending beyond the lorica, terminating in a hair-point c. 25% of total flagellar length.
Distribution
Ellis Fjord, Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica (Marchant et al., 1987b); Danish waters (Thomsen, 1973); North Pacific (Norris, 1965, as Sportelloeca kentii).
Comments
Norris’s (1965) Sportelloeca kentii was based on Stephanoeca kenti W.N.Ellis (1929: 73), but these descriptions have since been recognised as representing two distinct species. The name Stephanoeca kenti is retained for a choanoflagellate without longitudinal costae (Ellis, 1929, fig. 11); Sportelloeca kentii (with a distinct median band of longitudinal costae) was returned to Stephanoeca by Thomsen (1973) who honoured Norris with the epithet.
