Description

Cells spherical, colourless, 2–4.3 µm diameter, biflagellate. Flagella unequal; long flagellum 12.5–27 µm long, with mastigonemes; short flagellum 1.8–4.5 µm long. Cell body covered with 1 type of body scale consisting of a basal plate with a central spine; scales circular, 0.9–1.75 µm diameter, without a thickened rim or upturned margin; spine comprising a shaft 0.7–2.55 µm long and a thinner apical rod 0.3–0.7 µm long. Cysts ellipsoidal, c. 5 × 5.6 µm (Takahashi, 1987; figs 4, 5).

Distribution

Southern Ocean, south of Australia; fast-ice and seawater around East Ongul I., East Antarctica (Takahashi, 1987); New Zealand (Moestrup, 1979).

Comments

Paraphysomonas antarctica is morphologically similar to P. imperforata (q.v.).
