Description
Cells spherical, 2.4–3.2 µm diameter, biflagellate. Flagella unequal; long flagellum 6–7.5 µm long, covered with mastigonemes; short flagellum 2.4–3.0 µm long, smooth. Cell body covered with plate scales and crown scales. Plate scales elliptical, 0.7–0.82 µm long, 0.55–0.63 µm wide, mesh-like, with fine perforations, without a central spine or thickened rim. Crown scales circular, with a fenestrated crown-like superstructure supported by 4 struts on a simple basal ring.
Distribution
Southern Ocean, south of Australia; fast-ice and seawater around East Ongul I., East Antarctica (Takahashi, 1987); New Zealand (Moestrup, 1979); a widespread species (Preisig & Hibberd, 1982a, b); Baltic sea-ice (Ikävalko & Thomsen, 1996).
