Description

In vivo 65–145 × 50–105 µm. Body ellipsoidal to spherical, asymmetrical, sometimes laterally flattened; cytostome apically slightly protruding, retractile, eccentric and shifted somewhat to ventral side. Somatic kineties 24–40: 19–35 longitudinal, 4 long and 1 very short (kinetofragmon) spiral kineties; spiral kinety 4 not shortened posteriorly, with a distinct distance between kineties 4 and 5 (short kinetofragmon). Only a small non-ciliferous area on rear. Adoral membranelles 8 or 9. Nematodesmata c. 14–20. Macronucleus 1; micronucleus 1. Contractile vacuole in anterior third of body. Silverline system fine-meshed. Movement: slow.

Distribution

Ross Sea, in the region 65.95°–76.02°S and 134.85°–165.42°W, in sea-ice and rarely in the plankton under ice (Petz, unpublished data); Weddell Sea (Corliss & Snyder, 1986; Petz et al., 1995); Barents Sea (Meunier, 1910); Caspian Sea (Agamaliev, 1976).
