Description

In vivo 65–120 × 36–65 µm [population reported by Mamaeva (1989) with cells c. 300 µm long]. Body obconical, with 4–6 distinctly notched body whorls. Equatorial kinety extending spirally along whorls from left of oral cavity almost to posterior pole. Ventral kinety short, non-ciliferous, on dorsal side extending from posterior end of equatorial kinety to antapical pole. Anterior membranelles (polykinetids) 12–18, slightly separate from 12–22 ventral membranelles. Girdle of short extrusomes parallel to equatorial kinety. Subpellicular platelet layer in posterior three-quarters of the body. Macronuclear nodules 24–43 (–72); micronuclei numerous. Movement: swimming rapidly zig-zag.

Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean (Mamaeva, 1989); Weddell Sea (Gowing et al., 1989, as Laboea sp.); Atlantic (Fauré-Fremiet, 1924; Montagnes et al., 1988); Barents Sea, North Sea, Baltic Sea (Wulff, 1919); Pacific (Wailes, 1943).

Comments

This species can be mixotrophic due to chloroplast retention.
