Description

In vivo 60–200 × 20–60 µm. Body elongate-fusiform, variable, tapering anteriorly, posteriorly rounded, often slightly bent dorsally (banana-like); oral area 40–50% of body length; cytostome conspicuous; laterally flattened. Pigment spot left of cytostome reddish brown to black; red to orange granules scattered in cytoplasm. Somatic kineties 45–50; 1 slightly elongate caudal cilium. Adoral membranelle 1 long, composed of 10–20 transverse ciliary portions; membranelle 2 longitudinal; membranelle 3 spoon-like; paroral membrane bent. Scutica forming a long row of kinetosomes. Extrusomes 2–3 µm long, densely packed beneath pellicle. Macronucleus elongate, band-like; micronuclei c. 5. Contractile vacuole terminal. Movement: very fast in a spiral path, resting for short periods.
