Description

Cells usually solitary, sometimes in short chains, rectangular in girdle view, with a pronounced constriction between valve mantles and the narrow girdle, heterovalvate; pervalvar axis 13–20 µm; apical axis 10–32 µm (10–44 µm, fide Hendey, 1937). Upper valve rounded, with setae arising as a vault-like structure from the centre; lower valve flat with setae arising from inside the valve margin; small central spine present. All setae curving back towards lower end of chain and strongly spinose. Chloroplasts small, spherical.
