Description
Cells solitary or in chains of 2–18 cells, characteristically octagonal in girdle view; pervalvar axis 144–180 µm (Fig. d); girdle broad. Valves circular, 140–200 µm diameter, flat; central part raised, c. 50–75% of total diameter. Central rosette of areolae distinct (Fig. a, b); areolae hexagonal, 6 in 10 µm, decreasing slightly in size toward margin. Central labiate processes absent; row of marginal labiate processes 2–3 in 10 µm. Chloroplasts numerous, irregular, stellate.
Distribution
Wide distribution in Antarctic waters and southern seas; Lützow-Holm Bay (Tanimura et al., 1990); South Georgia, the Sandwich Group, Bransfield Strait, Cape of Good Hope (Hendey, 1937); inshore Davis Station, Prydz Bay, East Antarctica (Everitt & Thomas, 1986).
