Description

Cells solitary, discoid. Valves flat or convex, 80–130 µm diameter, with fine hexagonal areolae in fascicles; margin with numerous spinules. Areolation in two systems: a series of rather more distinct oblique lines crossing radiating fascicles of parallel lines, and lines parallel to the middle radius of each fascicle (Hendey, 1937). Central area and central rosette absent. Chloroplasts numerous, plate-like.

Distribution

Wide distribution in subpolar seas (Hendey, 1937); Ross Sea (Watanabe, 1982); Antarctic, south of Australia (Wood, 1960; Bunt & Wood, 1963).
