Description

Cells solitary or in distinctive pairs or triplets, or in chains united by mucilage pads or by surface spines, lenticular to cylindrical; pervalvar axis 9–32 µm. Valves circular, flat or convex; apical axis 14–32 µm, covered in small tapered spines or granules, especially towards the valve margin (Fig. c). Areolae loculate, opening externally by simple pores. Rimoportulae in a ring near the mantle edge (Fig. e). Girdle bands split, ligulate, with rows of small pores (Fig. e). Chloroplasts small, discoid, numerous.

Distribution

Type locality, Cape Margérie, Terre Adélie (Manguin, 1957); coastal waters off Davis Station, East Antarctica (Everitt & Thomas, 1986).

Comments

Specimens collected in the present study were usually smaller (apical axis 15–24 µm, pervalvar axis 9–25 µm) than those described by Manguin (14–22 µm and 22–32 µm, respectively).
