Description

Cells solitary or attached end-to-end and forming straight, zig-zag or stellate colonies of 3–12 cells, linear to lanceolate in valve view, tapering towards the poles; apical axis 60–134 µm; transapical axis 6.5–10.5 µm. Transapical striae c. 34–40 in 10 µm, scarcely visible by LM. Fibulae 4–8 in 10 µm. Central nodule present.

Distribution

Type locality, Terre Adélie (Manguin, 1957); sea-ice near Davis Station, East Antarctica (Archer et al., 1996b); Antarctic ice (Medlin & Hasle, 1990b); coastal waters off Syowa Station, East Antarctica (Ishikawa et al., 2001).

Comments

It is likely that many Antarctic reports of N. frigida Grunow, a Northern Hemisphere species, should be referred to N. stellata.
