Description

Cells solitary or chain-forming, overlapping c. one-sixth of cell length, linear in apical view, but gradually expanded towards the middle section; apices rounded. In girdle view margins slightly convex and ends truncate (Fig. c); apical axis 30–80 µm; transapical axis 2.5–3.5 µm. Transapical striae 23–28 in 10 µm. Interstrial membranes with 2 rows of minute poroids (Fig. b). Raphe keel eccentric; fibulae 13–18 in 10 µm. Central nodule present.

Distribution

Southern Ocean, offshore Wilhelm II Land at 60°50’S 93°36’E; type localities, South Atlantic 46°32’S 0°02’W and 51°29’S 0°08’W (Hustedt, 1958); Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean, 53–62°S, BRATEGG (Hasle, 1965a).

Comments

The closely related P. turgiduloides is larger and has more coarsely structured fibulae and striae (see below).
