Exuviaella baltica Lohmann (1908: 265, pl. 17, fig. 1a, b)
Prorocentrum pomoideum Bursa (1959: figs 108–111)Exuviaella aequatoralis Hasle (1960: 29, fig. 18a, b)
Dodge (1982: 35, text fig. 2M, N; p1. 1e)
Cells round in valve view, 9–22 µm long, 14–21 µm diameter, not or barely compressed in side view; older cells with a large intercalary band. Periflagellar area with a triangular flagellar pore and a smaller accessory pore.
Southern Ocean, offshore Wilkes Land, 57°35’S 105°46’E and Southern Ocean south of Australia.
Three species, P. antarcticum, P. balticum and P. compressum, have been reported from Antarctic waters. Prorocentrum is characterised by small, simple, rounded to elliptical cells and a cell wall of only 2 thecal plates. Dodge & Bibby (1973), Sournia (1986) and other authors placed Exuviaella in synonymy with Prorocentrum.
The specimens collected by us were slightly larger than previously recorded. Cells 9-10 µm long were reported by Dodge (1982) and less than 20 µm by Steidinger & Tangen (1997).
