Description

Cells broadly ovate in valve view, 30–50 µm long, c. 25 µm diameter, compressed (sometimes only slightly) in side view. Surface covered with small pores.

Distribution

Southern Ocean, south of Australia, 63°14’S 120°19’E; widely distributed in the Southern Ocean, but not found south of the Polar Front (Steidinger & Tangen, 1997); sub-Antarctic (Balech, 1976).

Comments

Three species, P. antarcticum, P. balticum and P. compressum, have been reported from Antarctic waters. Prorocentrum is characterised by small, simple, rounded to elliptical cells and a cell wall of only 2 thecal plates. Dodge & Bibby (1973), Sournia (1986) and other authors placed Exuviaella in synonymy with Prorocentrum.
