Synonyms

Pteridomonas danica D.J.Patt. & Fenchel (Patterson & Fenchel, 1985: 383, figs 1-30)

Description

Cells spherical to pomiform, 4–5 µm diameter, sessile or free-swimming, uniflagellate, with tentacles in 1 or 2 rings around the flagellum. Flagellum emerging from anterior end of cell, and a stalk c. 50 µm long emerging from the posterior end. The flagellum beats slowly, so that the cell swims with the stalk trailing behind.

Distribution

Southern Ocean, south of Australia.

Comments

Vørs (1992) noted that without thin-sectioning and TEM, it is virtually impossible to distinguish Actinomonas mirabilis from Pteridomonas danica.
