Cells solitary, spherical, 4–6 µm diameter, uniflagellate, covered by a periplast of two types of scales. Flagellum 6–7 µm long, with thin hair-like appendages (not flimmer-hairs). Large scales siliceous, shaped like a wide-brimmed hat; basal part ±elliptical, 1.7–2.9 × 1.9–3.2 µm, with a raised rim; part of the base patternless, the remainder with perforations of various sizes; a hollow projection arises from the base near the centre, sometimes bearing spinous ornamentation. Small scales unmineralised, ±circular, c. 0.45 µm diameter, with 8 arms radiating from the centre.
